Starting a blog is A LOT of work. It is not so simple. On the outside looking in, it looks like all you have to do is write a few blogs, monetize, and make money. But let me tell you, there is so much work involved and it can be so overwhelming.

That’s why I wanted to come today and share with you 5 things you need to do BEFORE you start blogging.

5 things you should start doing before blogging

It sounds easy, but it’s not so easy. Take this time to really think about what you want to write about and what your niche will be. It’s very important to find your niche because your audience wants to see consistency. They don’t want to see you one day talking about photography and then the next day talk about building engines in cars. Keep it consistent.

Next, this about what you would want your domain to be. This one was a real challenge for me. I wanted it to be relatable to my niche but I also wanted it to be something easy to remember. Keep in mind that just because you come up with a neat name does not necessarily mean that name will be available to you.

What I did was some more brainstorming. I wrote down my top favorite names and then headed over to Bluehost.com and checked to see if that domain was available.

Luckily, I was able to snag the name I wanted, but if Bluehost doesn’t have the name you want, they offer suggestions to help you get to as close as possible to the name you want.

What I mean about creating an email account is that you will need an email address to sign up for a lot of affiliate links and even for your Bluehost/Wordpress blog. I opened up a new email account for my blog so I could keep my personal and business emails separate and it has helped with organization so much!

Now you’re probably wondering why open a Pinterest account? Pinterest is the holy grail for bloggers! Pinterest is a search engine and is a great place to monetize your blog with keywords. Although you don’t have a blog yet, it’s great to go ahead and get this step out of the way so that when you do have a blog you wont’ have to worry about doing everything all at once !

4.  Lay out your editorial calendar

What is an editorial calendar? An editorial calendar is basically a list of times and subjects you will right about. In this step you need to think about when you will launch a new post. For me, it’s Monday’s! So for the month of October it may look like this:

10/9- How to write a blog

10/16- How to stay on budget

And so on. With your calendar laid out for the month, your subjects already covered, it will be much easier to stay on track and have your blogs written before your launch day.

Remember consistency is KEY!

This may seem like a silly thing to do since you don’t have a blog yet, but it is so crutial and helpful and will REALLY cut back on time for you!

When you start a blog, you don’t want to launch it empty. You want to have a blog that looks full and healthy! You want to snag and keep your audience engaged and looking around. If you only have one blog post they will read and click away. Really think about what you want to write and write 5-10 posts BEFORE starting your blog.

6.  Get Familiar with CANVA or PicMonkey.

Start playing around with Canva. I use Canva so I’ll be referencing Canva.  Canva is a graphic site where you can make beautiful images for your blog and pinterest. This can sometimes be time consuming so it’s great to have some images already created and ready so that when you’re ready to launch your blog, all you will have to do is  type your blog and add images.

If you follow all these steps FIRST, you will notice your first day of blogging will go so much smoother!

If you have done all of these steps and are ready to start your blog head on over to bluehost and get started.

I really like Bluehost because not only will it host your site you get a FREE domain! They also make it super simple for you and install WordPress for you so that is one less thing to worry about. You also can’t beat the price at $3.95/mo! Who knew owning your own website could cost as much as a cup of coffee!

I have written a blog post on “How to start a blog” so if you’re ready for the next step, head on over and get started on your blog! This blog will take you step by step on how to set up your blog. It sometimes can be a little confusing so I’m there holding you hand the whole time. If you ever have any questions, please contact me and I will be happy to help in the best way that I can.

I want to put another plug out there for Pinterest. I know there are so many social media sites to get started on, but I suggest focusing your attention on one to two social media outlets. The beginning stages are so confusing, so learn 1 or 2 media outlets and own it like the BOSS you are!

What do you thing? Do you have any tips to add for any beginner bloggers? If you like what you see, please subscribe!
