DIY Seasoning mix for spaghetti

I grew up eating lots of spaghetti, chili, and tacos and in fact, they are some of the first foods I learned to cook. They were super simple and I could do it all by myself.

One common factor my mother used in each one of her recipes were seasoning packets. These seasoning packets are the ones you get at the store that cost between .33- $1.  You know the type where you follow the directions on the back and you have dinner in no time!

I have many childhood memories that circle around these dishes! When I became a mom, I wanted to introduce these dishes to my children. There was just one problem. A lot of these packets are so full of fillers, sodium, and even MSG! YIKES!!

I didn’t want to feed my family this mess so I knew there had to be a better way!

Make your own packets

One day I was sitting down thinking about all the mess in these seasoning packets and figured I would do a google search to see if I could find some copycat recipes.

When it comes to seasoning packets, my favorite was the McCormick’s spaghetti mix, my goal was set and I was determined to find a copycat recipe.

After many trials and errors, I have finally found one that tastes VERY similar to what I set out looking for and I wanted to share it with you today.

what i love about making my own seasoning mix

What I love about making my own spaghetti seasoning mix is that it takes no time! In less than 5 minutes I can have everything I need ready to make spaghetti.

It is also CHEAPER than buying it at the store. Now I know, buying in the store is much easier, but believe me, making your own will be easy and healthier.

To save on time, put together your seasoning while you brown your meat. Sometimes I even put my seasoning mix together the day before. It is just that easy!

Spaghetti Mix Recipe

Now get ready for one of the easiest recipes that you will ever find.  Not only is it simple, it tastes like it took hours to make and the secret is all in the seasoning mix. Under the spaghetti mix recipe you will find my recipe to Spaghetti. This recipe will have dinner on the table in 30 mins! It’s also easily converted into a crockpot recipe!!

Spaghetti Mix

1 Tablespoon Minced Onion

1 Tablespoon Cornstarch

1 1/2 teaspoons of salt

1 teaspoon granulated sugar

1 Tablespoon Parsley Flakes

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (if you like a little spice 1 teaspoon is perfect, it’s not too spicy but gives a light kick)

3/4 teaspoon Italian Seasoning

1 teaspoon oregano

1/2 teaspoon basil

Mix all ingredients in a dry container and store until you are ready to use.

recipe for my super simple spaghetti

1 lb Ground beef or Italian Sausage with casing removed (I always use Italian Sausage

3 cans tomato sauce

1 can tomato paste

Garlic Powder

Onion Powder

Onion Flakes

Salt and Pepper

Spaghetti Mix from above

Brown and season meat. Season meat with salt and pepper . Sprinkle meat liberally with garlic powder and onion powder. I don’t have an exact amount, but I like to have all the meat lightly covered with garlic powder.

As your meat gets almost done, sprinkle onion flakes and continue cooking. Once browned, drain meat.

To your meat add spaghetti mix, tomato paste, and three cans of tomato sauce. Do in this order! Take your empty cans and add 3 cans of water. Begin to stir to try and get the tomato paste stirred in. Put your heat on medium high. While you are stirring, if the sauce feels too thick, add more water. You don’t want the sauce to be too thin or too thick. You will need to use your own judgment.

Once your sauce comes to a heavy simmer, lower heat and cook on low for 10 mins minimum or as long as you would like it to simmer.

I have actually turned this recipe into a crock pot recipe by browning the meat, adding it to the crock pot, and then continuing on with the recipe as directed. I’ve set in on low and let it go all day. It turned out great!

Serve over pasta for an amazing spaghetti recipe!

Easy and fast

This recipe for Spaghetti can have dinner on the table in a matter of minutes. Add some salad and bread and you have a complete meal that tastes like it took hours to make.

This is one of the few recipes that my picky daughter will actually eat. She begs me to make this every week.

It’s also a great recipe to make for when you have company coming over.

Recently I have turned this into a crock pot recipe like I mentioned above. For the crock pot version, cook on low for 4 hours and then switch your crock pot to warm. Leave on warm until you are ready to serve.

what do you do?

Do you make your own mix packets for any recipes? Do you have any tips to add to this recipe? I would love to hear what you do for any seasoning packets. How about spaghetti? Got a great recipe or something to add to this one to make it amazing?  Please leave me a comment below and let me know how you do your recipes, I can’t wait to hear all about them!!
